A broken handlebar cost Australias Rohan Dennis the silver medal in the road cycling time trial on a wet and treacherous day at the Rio Olympics.Dennis was second more than halfway through the rugged 54.5km coastal course when he was forced to stop and change bikes, costing him up to 30 seconds.He ended up fifth in a time of one hour 13 minutes 25 seconds, 23 seconds behind Dutch silver medallist Tom Dumoulin.Swiss time trial specialist Fabian Cancellara was more than a minute clear to claim a decisive gold.But Dennis was philosophical about the costly setback.These things happen - I cant be disappointed, he said.Look, I can still be proud of how I rode, even after the mechanical and changing the bike.Earlier on Wednesday, Australian Katrin Garfoot was ninth in the womens time trial.Meanwhile, now that Rio is done, its full steam ahead for Denniss Tour de France master-plan.The Australian cycling star revealed nearly a year ago that after the Olympics, he would radically change his career.Dennis wants to turn himself into a rider capable of contending at the three Grand Tours - Tour de France, Giro dItalia and Vuelta a Espana.He has started in four Grand Tours, most recently pulling out of last months Tour de France early to preserve himself for Rio.And last year, he became only the seventh Australian to wear the famed yellow jersey when he won stage one with the fastest time trial average speed in Tour history.But its a huge gap between those achievements and being able to match it with general classification stars such as three-time Tour champion Chris Froome.Dennis effectively will have to reinvent himself as a rider.Brad Wiggins managed it, evolving from a pursuiter and time trial specialist into the 2012 Tour champion, but it was brutally hard work.Dennis expects to know whether his campaign is feasible by the Tokyo Olympics.I want to be a Grand Tour contender ...
