SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Bryce Petty and Colin Kaepernick have been the focus of attention leading into Sundays matchup between the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers.Dont be surprised, however, if Matt Forte and Carlos Hyde have a greater impact on who wins and loses the battle of last-place teams. The Jets will be seeking to wash away the embarrassment of a nationally televised blowout while the 49ers attempt to end an 11-game losing streak in a matchup that figures to greatly aid someones draft position in May.Petty was named the starter for the Jets remaining four games shortly after Mondays 41-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.New York coach Todd Bowles announced at his postgame press conference that a decision already had been made before the Indianapolis debacle to give Petty a four-game showcase at the end of the lost season.Petty relieved starter Ryan Fitzpatrick for the second half of Mondays game. He went 11 of 25 for 135 yards and one touchdown. He threw two interceptions. Its a great opportunity for me, Petty told reporters after the game. Opportunities are far and few between in this league. You have to capitalize on every chance you get.The second-year pro out of Baylor didnt do that when he got the start in the Week 10 home game against the Los Angeles Rams. He threw for just 163 yards (one touchdown, one interception) in a 9-6 loss.Like the Jets, the 49ers gave their backup an opportunity in a loss last week. But unlike the Jets, 49ers coach Chip Kelly hadnt already made a long-term commitment to his second-stringer, Blaine Gabbert, who did nothing to permanently wrestle the job away from Kaepernick while playing the fourth quarter of a 26-6 loss at Chicago.Kelly admitted earlier this week that he and his coaches discussed their quarterback options on Monday before opting to stick with Kaepernick. We believe Kap gives us the best chance to win this week, the first-year 49ers coach explained.Actually, what might give each team its best chance of winning would be a solid performance by a running back. Before losing their last four in a row, the Jets built a modest two-game winning streak on the stretch of Fortes legs. He contributed 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns (one on a pass) to a 24-16 win at Baltimore in Week 7, and 82 yards and two rushing scores to a 31-28 home win over Cleveland the following week.Forte has been held to a total of 52 yards in losses to New England and Indianapolis the last two weeks but just might be rejuvenated by the sight of San Franciscos worst-in-football rushing defense this week. The 49ers have yet to overcome the season-ending Achilles injury suffered by standout linebacker NaVorro Bowman in Week 4. Bowman had 17 tackles in the first three games after having led the NFL in tackles last season.Without their stopper in the middle, the 49ers have allowed a 100-yard rusher in nine of their last 11 games -- including star-quality performances by guys who dont have Fortes impressive resume.San Francisco, meanwhile, hasnt won since Hyde rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-0, season-opening victory over the Rams.Hyde missed three games in midseason with a shoulder injury, but he has flashed his Week 1 form with 86-, 65- and 92-yard outings the last three weeks. With Kaepernick contributing 165 yards, the 49ers have fashioned the leagues third-best rushing attack in the last three weeks, accumulating 456 yards on the ground.Unlike Forte, however, Hyde figures to meet some resistance from the New York rushing defense, which has kept Todd Gurley, LeGarrette Blount and Frank Gore out of the end zone the last three weeks, limiting them to a total of 190 yards. The 49ers (1-11) will take the leagues second-worst record into the game. A loss would go a long way toward assuring a top-three pick while keeping alive their chances of picking first overall. The Jets (3-9) currently are tied with Chicago for the fourth-worst record.Originals Stan Smith NZ . Dallas hasnt ruled out the star quarterback for Sunday nights game against Philadelphia, but all signs point to Romos back injury pushing Kyle Orton into the starting role after two years of limited play as the backup. After the workout, Coger sat down and when the team went to check on him, they noticed there were issues. The team called 911 and paramedics arrived at 5:08 p.m. Coger arrived at Stillwater Medical Center at 5:48 p.m. and was pronounced dead at 6:23 p.m., Shutt said. The temperature at 5 p.m. Thursday in Stillwater was 99 degrees with a heat index of 105 degrees, The Stillwater News Press reported. It was obviously hot yesterday, and you know, in competitive athletics, youre always pushing, athletic director Mike Holder said Friday. If you want to be great at something, youve got to push the envelope. Thats what conditioning is all about.Technically, Coger died from cardiomegaly with left ventricular hypertrophy, and the manner of death was natural, Oklahoma State Medical Examiners Office spokeswoman Amy Elliott said in an email Friday. The offices family assistance coordinator, Eddie Johnson, told The Associated Press that the final report is not likely to be ready and released for another eight weeks.Oklahoma State basketball coach Brad Underwood broke down Friday as he remembered Coger. Underwood was in Las Vegas on a recruiting trip when he learned of Cogers death. This is the hardest couple of days Ive ever experienced in my coaching life. You say goodbye to players when they graduate and thats one thing, Underwood said, pausing to wipe away tears with a towel. Making that phone call to a mother is -- theres no words.Holder said the team will thoroughly examine its practices following Cogers death. The NCAAs Sports Medicine Handbook does not provide specific guidelines for when teams should avoid practicing in extreme temperatures. It says heatstroke is the third-leading cause of sudden death in athletes, and that athletes should be gradually introduced to activity in warm temperatures over a minimum period of 10 to 14 days. Coger had been in Oklahoma since July 5, the school said. The NCAA handbook also provides a list of signs and symptoms of heat injury, notes that heatstroke is most likely to occur at the start of preseason practices and says that some athletes with certain health conditions or athletes who are not adequately in shape can be more susceptible to heatstroke. It was not clear whether that was the case with Coger. Shutt said Coger underwent health screenings to ensure he was physically able to participate in sports, but said the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPPA, prohibits release of the results of the testing.ddddddddddddThe medical examiners email didnt indicate whether Cogers enlarged heart was an undiagnosed condition. But having an enlarged heart can create a propensity for problems and exercise, adrenaline and heat can make things worse, said Dr. Milind Desai, a cardiologist with the nonprofit Cleveland Clinic. The baseline disposition may already be there, but adding those factors can be like adding fuel to the fire, Desai said. These scenarios increase your chances of developing cardiac arrhythmias. Hes running and sweating, losing a lot of electrolytes, magnesium and potassium levels go haywire and they are all triggers for arrhythmias. In an interview with the Stillwater newspaper published earlier this month, Coger spoke of frequent headaches that plagued him during his high school days. He said he underwent surgery several years ago to drain fluid from around his brain. At the moment, Im thinking, Basketball is over, he told the newspaper, recalling his feelings at the time of the surgery. I gotta think beyond basketball now.Coger, a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, said in the interview that he recuperated from his surgery then started his college career at Eastern Florida State College. He transferred after one season to Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he played last season. The 6-foot-8 player then initially signed with Ole Miss last fall but opted for Oklahoma State after the Southeastern Conference ruled he was ineligible because of rules on junior college transfers.Holder said the workouts at OSU are left largely to the strength and conditioning staff, which was overseeing Thursdays workout. Ive got a lot of confidence in our staff here, Holder said.Shutt also said that under NCAA rules, basketball teams can meet for eight hours a week during the summer -- time that can be broken up as two hours on the court and six on strength and conditioning, or all eight on strength and conditioning. NCAA spokesman Christopher Radford confirmed that was the case, and noted that staff members are allowed to conduct and supervise that activity. In 2012, Coger played a friendly game of one-on-one with Washington Wizards star John Wall, who posted a photo of the matchup on Instagram following Cogers death. Wall wrote: Rest in Peace to the lil homie who always had the competitive spirit.. you will be missed Tyrek.Cogers death is the latest tragedy for OSU. Last fall, a driver crashed into a crowd at Oklahoma States homecoming parade, killing four spectators and wounding dozens. In 2011, womens basketball coach Kurt Budke, assistant Miranda Serna and two others died in a plane crash in western Arkansas. In 2001, 10 people died in a Colorado plane crash, including two mens basketball players and six staff members.Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. ' ' '
